How to wake up to better hair

Should I brush my hair a hundred times like my grandmother did before I go to bed?

Please don’t! Over-brushing will fray your strands and weaken the hair shaft.

Brushing your hair 100 times before bed is an old myth. We think it was a substitute for washing your hair back in the days when hot water was not readily available. You wouldn’t dream of brushing a cashmere sweater over and over, this would just wear holes in it. Treat your hair in the same delicate way: only brush it when it needs to look groomed, and treat it with care.

Can I sleep with Elasticizer in my hair?

Yes! Elasticizer is a great overnight hair mask. Sleeping with it in can be a time-saving way to include an intensive hair treatment in your regime. Wrap your hair in a microfibre turban, let your Elasticizer do its work, and then wash it out in the morning.

Is sleeping with wet hair bad?

Not necessarily. In fact, letting your hair dry naturally overnight can be better for it than frazzling it with your hair dryer.

However, wet hair is prone to breakage. This is because wet strands are swollen by about 30%. It is also because wet hair tangles more easily (since the cuticles are raised rather than smooth). If you don’t want to wake up with your hair in knots, try to allow a good amount of drying before your head hits the pillow. Or tie it into loose braids and wake up with soft waves!

Speaking of pillows, should I invest in a silk pillowcase?

Whether you choose cotton or silk, your pillowcase will not cause hair damage or breakage. However, some people do swear by silk for beautifully smooth, tangle-free hair in the morning. It just comes down to personal preference.

Should I tie back my hair for sleeping?

Tying back your hair at night can help keep it neat, just make sure you do so loosely, and use cotton-covered soft bands to help avoid breakage. This puts less tension on the hair than tight styles using uncovered rubber bands.
