Trichology 101

At Philip Kingsley, Trichology is at the heart of everything we do. Our product ranges, our hair Treatments, our recommended daily routines, and our holistic approach to hair care are all based on the research and knowledge of our award-winning Trichologists.

But what exactly is a Trichologist, and what do they do? What does a Consultation with a Philip Kingsley Trichologist entail, and why might you want one? We answer your most asked questions…

What is a Trichologist?

A Trichologist is an expert in hair and scalp health. Just as a dermatologist specialises in all aspects of skin care (from serious issues to cosmetic ones) a Trichologist specialises in all aspects of hair and scalp care.

At Philip Kingsley, our Trichologists diagnose and treat all forms of hair loss, ranging from pattern hair thinning (androgenetic alopecia) to excessive daily hair fall (telogen effluvium). We treat all forms of scalp conditions, ranging from common dandruff to severe scaling, psoriatic plaques, and scarring.

Our Trichologists are also experts on style-based and cosmetic issues, such as dry hair, limp hair and split ends. We take a holistic approach to hair care, meaning that we are always keen to advise on hair healthy diets and lifestyles, as well as optimum hair care routines.

What happens during a Consultation with a Trichologist?

Our Trichologists are renowned for being approachable, trustworthy and empathetic. We are used to seeing all types of hair and scalp conditions, and whatever your concern, we will always do our best to help.

During a Consultation, your Trichologist will begin by discussing any concerns you may have. They will take notes on your health history, lifestyle, stress levels, exercise routine, diet, and genetics. They will then examine your hair and scalp thoroughly, and in many cases they will be able to give a diagnosis immediately. Often, your Trichologist may ask for blood tests to help form a complete picture of your general health. Based on all of this, they will recommend a course of action or treatment plan.

How often should I see a Trichologist?

Most people do not seek a Trichologist until they develop a hair or scalp problem. In these cases, ongoing visits will depend on your diagnosis and treatment requirements.

However, it is a really good idea to give your hair and scalp a regular health check, even before any issues arise. Our Trichologists can arrange blood tests to check your levels of vital nutrients such as Iron, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin D, which are needed for optimum hair growth. They can also discuss hair-healthy diets, styling habits, products and hair care routines, in order to minimise damage and ensure that your hair is always in the best condition possible.
